Christmas 2008

What a fun time! Marley really enjoyed opening her presents this year, which surprised me. I didn't think she'd show much interest in, but she got really excited. "oh wow" "let me see" "open it" were all squealed out between fits of laughter and clapping. Yes, Marley laughs out loud with her mouth wide open and claps - sound like anyone you know?

i picked up that silly santa hat for $1 at giant eagle on xmas eve getting some last last last minute things. she loves it. has been wearing it all the time. i wish i would have thought to get one sooner because we could have had alot of fun with it!

sunday before christmas, we had the shipe family party at aunt cyndi's house. it was great seeing everyone, and marley got to play with her 2nd cousins and meet the new puppy Biscut. of course, she was tickled to bits to see him. we had a wonderful surprise when our cousins from georgia, colby and ashley, showed up unannounced! i haven't seen them in years :) we all exchanged gifts, and marley received two baby dolls from taylor - -she's been taking such good care of them too. giving them lots of love since we came home. thanks taylor!!

we spent christmas eve at the dadich homestead. marley loves loves loves her cousins and she had a blast! she sat with jonah (who had spent the morning in the ER) on the couch and watched some Dora. She followed aidan around as he pretented to be Santa. she was up baby carter's butt if she could get near him. she tried lots of new foods like a bite of shirmp, briskit and peanut blossom cookies. guess which one was her favorite? can you find the picture? after supper the kids changed into their christmas pj's and we opened gifts from grandma & grandpa, the bakelaars, the dadichs and uncle andrew. then it was off to our house to get into bed and await SANTA!

since we both were sick with the flu/cold, we slept in A LITTLE. but marley noticed the presents under the tree the minute i set her down on the floor. she pointed and said "oh look", and then even took an ornament off the tree. that was the very first time she had touched the tree too! again, she got pretty excited opening presents. but once she got to a book, we had to stop and read it front to back - - LOVE THAT SHE LOVES BOOKS! and the dora toothbrush was never far away. but she really shocked me with the sit and spin. she took one look at it, got really exited and jumped right on it and started to try to spin it correctly!! i didn't even know she'd ever seen one before, let alone ridden on one.

later that day, grandma and grandpa and drew came for christmas dinner. it didn't go as well as i'd hoped because i was so sick, but there was hot food to enjoy with our loved ones and we're thankful for that!! oh, and the rum caked turned out NICELY . . . . grandpa and drew took naps after dinner, and you can see from the one picture marley was trying to get drew to play with her.

we hope that these holidays were as special and as memorable for each of you as they were for us and we wish you all the best in two thousand and nine!!

it's beginning to look alot like christmas

marley's been pretty busy since thanksgiving. the living room and dining room floors were refinished and it took way longer than mommy thought, so marley had to eat her meals in the playroom. where everything was crammed in to clear out the other rooms! the sycamore center (her daycare) had their christmas program. marley's class sang "away in a manger". we decorated christmas cookies. grandma and grandpa invited us all to their house for tree decorting and pizza. marley played in and ate the snow one afternoon. we went to keon's birthday party at the tumble zone. marley had a blast! she especially liked the trampoline runner and the uneven bars. we visited kraynaks for their christmas tree display. marley cried. alot. she was pretty scared. but she loved standing outside the door dancing to the loud music.

how we spent our thanksgiving

wearing cozy new winter pj's on cold nights (and days!) and fancy new sweater dresses.
smiling for mama's new camera.
loving loving loving baby carter!
learning how to swiffer the floor (and help carry in grocery bags).
"painting" Dora with a fancy water brush - thanks mert!
my new favorite animal is the zebra. seriously.
peyton got her head stuck in a kleenex box.
the new kitten is here to stay, he's guarding his territory from in front of the tv. he's name is Nemo, and marley named him all by herself. i think she was actually trying to say "mabel" but it sounded more like Nemo, so the name stuck.

hope you guys had as much fun as we did :)

Trick or Treating

Every halloween season, our mall hosts and indoor trick or treating, costume contest and crafts event for local kids. it's not much, our mall is small, but it's inside so you don't have to worry about the weather. the kids don't get tired. the candy wasn't great, marley could only have the suckers. ok, she could have had the peanut butter cup too, but we have a long standing agreement about those.

marley and i went with my sister marcy and my nephews aidan, jonah and carter. pirate aidan insisted on holding marley's hand and helping her. johan was a dinosaur on a mission. and marley was a little spacey. then there's carter. he spend the evening in the new jellybean carrier (the most wonderful new baby present from his aunt nini).

i got marcy's permission, so i thought i'd share some pictures. we went to burger king with the playyard afterward as a special treat for the kids. and a "no cook dinner" for the moms!

LOTS OF NEW THINGS GOING ON HERE!

just a quick picture update. marley got a new playroom. finally. and she loves loves loves it. she especially likes to sit in her new beanbag and watch her tv. it's pretty much the only time she's not in movement.

she's also got some new medicine. we're still feeling the effects of that nasty rsv last february. she has to have a breathing treatment each and every night, and sleep with the vaporizer. i'd been giving her zyrtec every night too in an attempt to be ahead of any cold. but that hasn't been working, so she's now on singular every night. god love her, she picked it up and chewed it like a champ! her first big girl medicine (sorta sad huh? she's only 15 months and has the medicinal routine of a senior citizen.)! she also gets benedryl on top of that when her "allergies" start kicking in. and since we've been trying to figure this all out, she happened to sneak in a sinus infection. which has now moved into her eye, and she gets eye drops 3 times a day. and she's still on 2 prescription diaper creams - - and still has a rash. AAGH!!

i got a new office/scrap room. and the computer started going all crazy every time it was turned on, so i got a new one of those too.

and 2 weeks ago, mabel gave us a surprise. in the form of giving birth on my bed. while i was sleeping in it. i didn't hear a thing until just after it was all over (thank god i guess) so it was quite the shocker at 1:30 am! i'm not sure who was more surprised - me, mabel or peyton (who now sits beside the basket and cries every time she hears the kitten meow - i'm sure you all remember peyton's false pregnancy last christmas - it's aparently permently damaged her psyche).

and in the midst of all this - my car battery died one day (thank god i had come home to go to the bathroom as wasn't in the projects somewhere!). and i thought i had a nasty sinus infection, was on 2 rounds of antibiotics and still not getting better. one day i couldn't handle the pain any more so i went to the er - i was sure a spider or something had crawled into my ear. they found no sign of infection, told me to go to the dentist. he tries to pull a badly decaying and leaking tooth and it shatters. so he has to SURGICALLY REMOVE THE TOOTH FROM MY MOUTH!! resulting in i think 6 stiches and him having to cancel all his afternoon appointments.

so the next time your dr's office calls you at the last minute to reschedule because of an emergency, shame on you for thinking he's out golfing.

and if you haven't heard from me in a while, you know now why!! cheerio :)

Our Summer

has flown by!! oh my gosh. i can't believe labor day has come and gone, and that we're feeling the fall weather. we've been busy with work (mom) and learning so many new things (me). i had my first trip to the zoo with aunt jen and uncle shawn in july. i got to pet a deer and i had a good time imitating the bear shaking his head. i spent some time with the dadichs in their pool. it was a rough start to the water play but now i love it. i also like playing with my cousins on their "pirate ship" swing set. i have fun swinging, but my favorite is the slide. my mom got me a little swing and slide set for our backyard and i can go down the slide all by myself. it's small enough that we can even bring it in the house when the weather gets cold :)

i had fun at my birthday party. and i hope everyone else did too. i got alot of great toys and books and puzzles and clothes. the cake was delish!! the bummer was that i had my very first ear infection so i wasn't feeling all that well.

but since i turned the big o-n-e alot has changed. I CAN WALK NOW!! and it's great. i am everywhere, into everything and i want to do it all by myself. the dog and the dog food are not safe from me. our current record is 21 pieces of dog food in my mouth at one time. the cats are smart, they stay on the other side of the gate at the basement steps. but i keep trying to coax them to come out with my binky and lots of "meow"s. it's only a matter of time cats. only a matter of time.

grandma and grandpa have taken me to 3 different fairs this summer. i love the fair. the food. the rides. the animals. they are my favorite :) i talk to them all in their own language (moo, baa, bak bak, and cock-a-doodle-doo) and i'm not afraid to pet them either. i'm definelty turning into an animal lover!

hope you enjoy the pictures. i'll be busy next week moving into the todder room at daycare. see ya babies! i'm a big girl now!

love - MARLEY

i have not forgotten

about you, dear blog reader friends. it's just been crazy. all aspects of life have been crazy. it's now 10:30pm and i'm just getting time to sit down and have a minute. of course, there are a zillion things that need to be done. anyone feel like folding laundry or unloading a dishwasher for me? come on! you know you want to!!

marley has been changing every day. in little ways and in big ways. she's a crawling maniac, constantly on the move. and fast too! and she can climb up the steps. the entire flight. which she loves to do. i've got gates sitting here waiting for me to figure out how to install. she really likes her hippo push toy and is now walking behind it like a big girl. she's stood by herself a couple of times, but falls pretty quickly. so we aren't quite walking, but probably by the end of summer.

and her mouth moves just as much as her legs do :) she loves music and dances along. she has also figured out how to "sing" to herself. she does her rocking/dancing and then vocalizes along in this high-pitched sing-songy voice. she loves to play "peek a boo" and "so big". she blows kisses, and gives hugs and kisses. she waves hi and bye, and can say both. she says "mom" now, very clearly. and has used "papa" for her grandpa. "da" is for the peyton, and "ka" is for the cat. she also produces a great "s" sound and can clearly say "ass". i am so proud! she signs "more" and "milk", and is getting very interested in watching the sign language stuff. we found some old school sesame street you tube videos and she's so intrigued by them. especially "ladybug picnic".

marley has also developed quite a temper. she understands "no" very well, but has begun to sass back a little. she's also been known to slap at people when she's mad.

i'm starting to introduce milk. she got ahold of aidan's sippy cup of chocolate milk one day and drank the whole thing. no problems after, so i figured why not give it a try. i think she'll go easily to whole milk completely, but i think we're going to have some problems giving up the bottle. i bought a straw cup to try with her. she can drink well from a straw, so i'm hoping that that works a little better than a regular sippy cup as far as replacing the bottle. wish me luck!

we had our first vacation. we went to north carolina for marley's cousin kate's 1st birthday. it was so much fun. kate and marley played very nicely together, and seemed to really enjoy each other's company. it was a long trip back, just the 2 of us. and i've had some trouble putting marley to bed at night since we came back too. she got used to sharing a room with mommy I guess. oh well. i guess before i know it i'll be begging her to cuddle with me!!

i'll try to get some recent pictures loaded this weekend! enjoy the heat :)

Our First Trip to the ER

oh yes. it starts early in the frost household.

wednesday night, marley was just not going to sleep and maybe seemed a little off. by 10 pm (she has never been up that late) i decided to take her temp b/c her cheeks were flushed. she wasn't warm mind you, but hey, at least i felt like i was doing something. no fever of course. she's just kinda lying on my bed, i stand up to put her dirty diaper on top of the dresser away from the cat and dog, and the next thing i know she's sliding off the bed head first onto the floor. the hardwood floor. so we call the dr. on call, are told what to watch for as far as any possible head-injury and go about our night. she cried, yeah, but the thing never even bruised.

thursday they say she's fine all day at daycare. i get her home and barely inside the door and she starts puking. one of the things to watch for. i call the dr, get the on-call message, which basically tells you to go to the e.r. so we picked up grandma at work (thank god she happened to be working late that night) and off we went.

turns out it was a virul tummy issue rather than a head injury. you'd think that would be just a simple trip to the er right?? if you've been reading this blog at all, you know that wouldn't be the case for us . . .

1. on monday i had taken marley for her 9 mo well baby visit, to be told that for some still-unknown-yet-now-resolved-reason her health insurance had been termintated. so i'm sitting the the waiting room sweating what to do if they turn us away or send me a huge bill.
2. they have these crazy pediatric bed/cribs that i put the railing up on just to see how it worked and then couldn't get it back down. with my baby inside of it. puking.
3. there was a mom and kid in the room next too us, i'm not sure what the kid was having done but the mom fainted. which resulted in alot of staff yelling and running. you would have thought it was a full code like on "trauma in the e.r." on t.l.c. ended up the mom had to be then admitted into the e.r. herself.
4. they had a fire drill.
5. i got the flu. then so did jonah, aidan, marcy, tim and my dad. jury's still out on my mom and andrew (who unsuspectingly came home for a visit and ended up having to run ginger ale and pedialite back and forth to everyone - we love you uncle drew xoxo).

only us.

i did take pictures on my cell phone and i'll try to figure that jazz out so you can see them.

We are officially . . .

. . . crawling!

we'll try to get some video of it up later. it takes me a while to figure all that out. i'm off to baby-proof the house :)

March 2008

hello again friends. boy am i tired. all this rolling around just wears me out! the big news this month is that we have a new addition to our family. pete is my new puppy. he's part jack russell terrier and pomeranian. well, that's what we think anyway. he's keeping us all busy.

like i said, i've been moving around alot. you put me on the floor and i'm gone. i love to get into my mom's basket of magazines. and then i try to eat them. for some reason i really like the taste of paper.

i've been getting a little frustrated too. i don't understand why a girl can't have things her way, when she wants them. is that too much to ask? why does my mom keep telling me "no" and moving me somewhere else? and i really hate it when she takes something away from me. the other day we were in the grocery store and i was happily minding my own business chewing on a birthday card. all of a sudden my mean mom takes it away from me! to add insult to injury she tries to give me her keys to chew on. well, i voiced my displeasure for quite awhile in that store. they won't forget me there anytime soon.

i'm eating alot of table foods now. i like pretty much anything. on bathnights mom lets me have a teething biscuit or a messy cookie. yummy. and my pincer grasp is perfect now. sometimes i can even move the food nicely from one hand to the other. thank god for thumbs!! and on aidan's birthday i had cake and ice cream. woo-hoo!! i'm liking that stuff.

my first st. patricks day and easter were nice. alot of good memories with family and friends. and maybe next year i'll be allowed to have some of that candy-stuff that was in the plastic easter eggs. just have to wait and see i guess.

i'm crawling a little bit. well, forward that is (i can go about 3 "steps"). now backwards i'm a pro. i can make it clear across the room. i can also transition from laying on the floor to sitting very nicely now. pretty soon my crib mattress will have to be lowered because i've pulled to stand once or twice by myself.

i'm really talking alot too. and singing now. my mom and i watch sign language videos sometimes during my last bottle (our cuddle time) and she's showing me how to move my hands to make the signs.

spring has arrived around here and i'm really looking forward to spending some time outside. going to the park, walking the dog, maybe getting a swing (hint hint mom!) . . . stuff like that. i hope you all enjoy the warmer weather too!!

see you next month - MARLEY :)

Happy Easter

or "hoppy easter" as uncle andrew made us say today! we hope everyone had as wonderful a day with family and loved ones as we did.

the easter bunny did not forget marley on her first easter. we woke up this morning to a wonderful array of goodies in her basket and beside the tv. she got some new pajamas, 3 books by one of mommy's favorite authors (patricelli), some socks, a little train engine that has popping balls and will move across the floor on it's own (to entince someone into crawling FORWARD), a stuffed bunny from build-a-bear and a set of tony stewart sippy cups. woo-hoo!! and i guess the easter bunny thought marley was too young for candy because she got some sweet potato puffs instead. and he was thoughtful enough to send along a new mirror for marley to look at while in the car because the one she got from aunt bridget, aunt bridy and aunt amy broke.

we spend the afternoon with our family in warren, pa. marley loved the easter egg hunt. she got her eggs and hugged them tight to her chest and rolled around on the floor talking to them. and if one got away, she went right after it.

February 2008

Posted by Picasa
well, i had a really busy and eventful month for february. my mom is still trying to catch her breath and that's why the update is coming so late!
as you know from before, i had rsv. which can be a pretty dangerous respiratory virus in babies. i seemed to have a relatively moderate case of it (as in i never had to go to the hospital). i vacationed at home with mom for about a week and a half, and then was back at school. my cough and a little bit of congestion hung around for a while, but other than that i was good to go.
and go! go! go! i go. i go alot. i'm in constant movement now. i roll all over the place and never stay still for long. something always catches my eye and i have to go after it. i'm thinking about crawling, but i've heard it's hard on your knees so i think i'm gonna hold off on that for a little bit more. i like to get up on my hands and knees and rock, and i really like to push myself backwards while on my belly. as you can see from the pictures i love love love the jumperoo aidan and jonah let me borrow. it's divine. a good place to take a nap.
while i was home with mom and feeling miserable anyway, i decided to get all the discomfort over with at one time. i got 6 teeth. in less than a week. 4 on the top and 2 on the bottom. it's really changed how my face looks, especially when i smile. and now mom will give me alot of new foods. i like fork mashed fruits and vegetables, and i can even chew up small pieces too. i like cheeris and gerber puffs. i can pick those up with my hand, but i'm still working on my pincer grasp so i can get them into my mouth. mom gives me tastes of everything: brownies, cookies, grown-up oatmeal and applesauce, crackers. sometimes she'll let me have a biter biscuit or a cookie on my own. yum!
i'm also enjoying talking to everyone. i can say and wave "hi" and i say "mama". i sing to myself when mom lays me down at night and while we're riding in the car. and since i'm a big girl and can sit in the front of the cart when we go shopping i will talk to anyone and everyone who talks or smiles to me.
and i like to eat paper.
i hope everyone has a safe and happy st. patty's day! oh - and an easter too.
love ~ marley (and my mom)

Marley's on the mend . . .

i hope!

it's been 4 days since the diagnosis of RSV and we've had a few ups and downs.

the dr office had me pretty scared that we were gonna end up at children's hospital in pittsburgh. they think the RSV started on tuesday, and about day 5 is the worst of it. which would have been over the weekend for us. by sunday she had yet to spike a fever (even a little one) and was doing well with her breathing treatments. so we finally left the house for a trip to lowes and then to my parent's house. aunt deb and uncle steve were coming to visit and had never met marley, so we had to see them :)

you can tell she's sick. she's not herself at all. quiet, kinda sits around and just looks at you. not eating or drinking nearly as much as she usually does. but she's alert, awake and not seeming too uncomfortable you know? and saturday she slept through the night and well into sunday morning for the first time in i think 2 weeks. :)

then last night all heck it the roof. she was up and down all night, just so uncomfortable and miserable. but still no fever, or anything i could pinpoint. she's teething too, so i finally gave her some motrin thinking that that may have been the culprit. she fell asleep, but was restless in the bouncy seat she's been sleeping in since i don't know when. so i got brave and put her in her bed, and she rolled onto her side and was out like a light. i woke up about 2 hours later to the most god-awful wheezing i had heard yet. really, it wasn't even that bad the first day at the dr office. i get her back up and do a breating treatment. she fell back asleep but was still wheezing. just as bad. it usually stops right after the treatment and then starts up again just before the next one is due. not today. she wheezed for the next 3 1/2 hours, until i gave her another treatment. she did get better with that one. but has been wheezing more today than the past few days.

and her little head is so stuffy. all this yellowish and greenish gunk coming out. dr thinks its related to the virus, so no antibiotic. i'm just to continue giving her benedryl. i mean, it worked so well so far you know?? but she's less stuffy tonight, so i'll just have to wait and see what tomorrow am brings. i'm supposed to call the dr if she gets a fever or a puffy look under her eyes. i'm beginning to think marley has some crazy immune system b/c she hasn't gotten a fever yet. kid has rsv, and still no fever.

so thanks for all your well-wishes. those top teeth are really coming in, so before too long they'll show up on the camera. :) and you know i'll post a picture.

There's been alot going on lately . . . .

but that's no excuse for not blogging. so for all our fans out there we send a big apology!

marley had her 6 month dr appointment monday 1/14. she's doing great. so far she's on track with all her developmental milestones, they're pleased with what she's eating and has been pretty darn healthy overall. she's had those first signs of a cold off and on since her 4 month check-up but it never turned into anything. so far we've dodged that bullet. she weighs 18 lbs and 4 oz, and she's 26 1/2 inches long. that's about the 88th and 75th percentiles. what can i say?? she's got her mom's body.

then the following thursday, i come downstairs after my a.m. routine to a flooded kitchen. i made a quick call to my dad, took marley to daycare and cancelled my clients, and then came home to try to figure this out. my dad and i spent all morning working on the drainage system and eventually found the clog. i won't go into all the details, but it was pretty much as anyone can imagine. complete with surprise sprays in the face, disgusting stuff all over clothes, a trip to home depot, and many curse words.

and then on sunday i wake up to no water in my bathroom. frozen pipes. this happened last year, so i called my dad again and did the same stuff i did before to defrost the pipes. like i said, this was in the morning. i call my dad in the middle of the afternoon asking him how long this defrosting should take. after all, i only have one bathroom. i finally get some hot water in there, but only to the sink and to the toilet. go figure. i mean, the pipes go the the bathtub first so why would i expect there to be hot water there? my dad comes over (again) and we try all this stuff but can't get the water working. it's like 8pm now. so i call a plumber. they'll come over monday. which is MLK day, so i'm not working. thank god. my dad continues to work until after 10 i think, then leaves me with a protable heater in the crawlspace and alot of fears about starting a fire. that night i left water running everywhere and the heat cranked up to keep anymore pipes from freezing. i'm sure my water and gas bill doubled in just one day.

on monday, still no water. yes it's been 24 hours now. the plumber comes about 10. he can't figure it out, but was gonna try something that probably wouldn't work. but would cost up around $400 anyway. and if it didn't work i was going to have to start tearing up floors and walls - and i'm not kidding or exaggerating. so the plumber sits down to write up this estimate, my dad sits down to shoot the shit with him, and i sit down to pretty much cry and pray that the pipes just burst (b/c then insurances pays!!) when the DAMN WATER STARTS COMING OUT OF THE FAUCET! i kid you not - all the guy thinks he did is move some debris out of the way in the basement and that must have let enough warm air get up in the crawlspace to the pipe.

oh the joys of homeownership.

then it's thursday again. i start to feel a little sick late in the day. wake up friday and feel fine. but by that afternoon i'm in the e.r. with a temp of about 105 and the diagnosis of influenza. yeah - the real flu, not just the "oh i feel like crap i must have the flu" but the flu that they give you special flu medicine for. and if anyone reading this ever has to take the special flu medicine, take it with food. because if there's anything worse than the flu it's the flu with dry heaves. just trust me. i had to take the special flu medicine, cough syrup with codine, sudafed, ibuprofen and run a vaporizer. this is where being a single mom is unfortunate, the dr told me the meds were pretty much going to pretty much put me to sleep. so i packed up marley and peyton, and off we went to the grandparents. i never made it past the couch. with the exception of the dry heaves incident. on saturday my mom had plans so she took marley to my sister marcy's house. marley stayed with her cousins jonah and aidan until sunday, and then back to grandma's house. i stayed with my dad.

MY DAD IS SO SICK OF ME RIGHT NOW. and i love you for it Dad!! xoxox

i've been trying to post pictures of marley with my posts. you'll notice that there aren't any today. that's because i can't find my camera. yeah. great 2 weeks huh??

but my baby is safe and sound, warm and healthy, snoring softly in her crib. and believe me, it's all worth it.

December 2007

wow. alot happened in december. of course, i had a great first christmas. santa brought me lots of stuff, both toys and clothes. i'm such a busy player now and i really like toys that i can pick up and move from one hand to the other. and everything that i can pick up goes in my mouth. i can sit-up pretty well now, and i really like to do that. i'm eating stage 2 baby foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. and i get to drink some juice every day too. with all these new foods my tummy was getting pretty upset so the juice keeps things going. my mom makes me try my sippy cup with juice first. but i'm still not too sure about that crazy thing so i get to finish it up from my bottle. which i can hold all by myself now, and i'm drinking 7 ounces of formula at a time. i got alot of pretty new clothes for christmas and i wear size 6-9 months. but some of the pants are a little snug around those "frost thighs". mom got me a new carseat because i was getting cramped in the baby carrier. i also got a new taggie blanket. it's my most favorite thing to play with when i'm sleepy.

thanks for checking out my update, and i'll see you next month!! oh - mom's been a little behind in this so i'm sure there will be another post from her soon about my 6 month dr. visit.

have a happy and healty 2008 everyone! love - marley
